Swim Meets
Everything you wanted to know, but were afraid to ask…
Swim meets are a great family experience! They're a place where the whole family can spend time together. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind to assure your swimmer performs their best by reducing stress and increasing their fun! They are great time for socializing and team bonding, as well as, a way for your swimmer to see the fruits of their hard work.
What to Bring
- Suit, extra cap and goggles
- 2 towels, warm-ups, extra t-shirt, deck shoes
- Entertainment: cards, books, coloring books, walkmans, and video games are all good ways to pass the time.
- Food: Even though there are snack bars at each meet, the cost is high and most always - junk food. Coaches suggestions: water, fruit juice, sports drinks, granola bars, yogurt, cereal, jello cubes, sandwiches, and plain pasta.
Before the Meet Starts
- All swimmers should arrive at the pool 15 minutes prior to the start of warm-up and report to their coach immediately and confirm events swimming.
- Upon arrival, find a place to put your swimmer's stuff in the designated team area.
- Your swimmer should then prepare for warm ups. It is essential that all swimmers warm-up with the team. Swimmer's bodies are just like cars on a cold day - they need to get the engine going and warmed-up before they can go all out.
The Meet Starts
- It is important for every swimmer to know what events they are swimming and pay close attention to the events being called to the Clerk of Course.
- Before reporting to Clerk of Course, all swimmers should see their coach for last minute instructions or tips. No coaching can take place once a swimmer has reported to Clerk of Course per league rules.
- After each swim:
- Wait until all swimmers are finished before exiting the pool. Shake
hands with the swimmers in the next lanes.
- The swimmer is to ask the timers for their time.
- They should go immediately to their coach. The coach will ask their time and discuss the swim with each swimmer.
- Between swims the swimmers are asked to stay in the team area. If a bathroom or food run is necessary, make sure a coach is notified.
- Once a swimmer has completed all of their events they can go home. Make sure, however, you as a parent, check with the coach before leaving to make sure your swimmer is not participating in a relay. Relay swimmers will be determined at the meet, depending upon the fastest swims that day.
